CENTRAL OTAGO 2021 POSTIE BIKE RALLY
Welcome to the Goldfields Heritage Trust – 2021 Postie Bike Rally
Commencing Saturday 13 November at Alpha Street Reserve, Cromwell.
Meet your fellow riders as you enjoy the supplied breakfast at the Reserve. From 8am at the Reserve, we will be supplying bacon and eggs, hash browns, for you to enjoy before commencing your 300Km days ride. Don’t linger too long, as its a good 2.5hrs riding to your lunch stop, where we will be suppling a decent Postie Lunch of filled roll, cake, fruit & drink.
Be sure to have sufficient fuel for 150km of back country riding. There are two gas stations in town where we are holding the lunch stop (card operated pump). Carry a few tools too in case you need adjust or tighten something. A well lubricated chain will help. Weather is usually pretty good, though you had better come prepared for rain and cold. If your bike breaks down, you may be waiting an hour or so for the Broom Wagon and trailer to arrive.
You’ll be handed a Route Map that will take you through country rarely travelled. Most of the ride is on county gravel roads in various conditions. In the afternoon section, you’ll be passing through some real back country with muddy roads and a stream/river to cross. Its not too deep, though those with smaller wheels may want to walk their bikes across. There are some sealed roads too of course, so be aware of faster traffic.
The morning ride is straight forward enough, a steep downhill in one section, so take it easy here. Its one lane and twisty pretty good, just one or two gates to open/close. Riding through more of the back country you will eventually make it to the lunch (and fuel) stop.
After lunch you’ll be heading to the remoter parts of the Postie Run. A few gates (OK, six or so), some cattle to shoo out the way, a stream crossing then back to some decent gravel roads before coming to a Country Pub you simply have to stop at, if nothing else to take photo and maybe enjoy a bit of Southern hospitality.
Dont linger too long here as you have more country roads to travel on your return to Cromwell and the Alpha Street Reserve where we will be supplying dinner from 4pm with Prize Giving at 5pm.
No need to bring a support vehicle on the Rally, as two 4WDs with trailers will be following the Postie’s, collecting breakdowns, if any. They have no tool support or mechanics on board though.
Now the essentials bits.
Breakfast commences 8am at the Cromwell, Alpha Street Reserve. Easy to find, 1st left over Deadmans Point Bridge and 400M down the road.
Lunch is between 12 and 1pm, we’ll tell you where, but there’s plenty of parking, toilets and services available too.
Youll need a Road worth motorcycle, current WoF, Rego and in sound order, we will be checking this…
Finish is the same as the Start point, with plenty of parking nearby. Lots of accommodation options nearby too, though the Top10 motorcamp is now closed down, ignore any of its links that you see.
